Not White Walls

Installation/One Night Stand LA/2017/Los Angeles, California

Upon second glance, something seems to be going on here. Not White Walls is about looking carefully and fondly at the vernacular conditions of single-story homes in a specific neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Beginning as a simple frontal photograph of each house, the project uses images to construct a multilayered physical model that foregrounds the aesthetic character of privacy. In these homes, privacy is conveyed not by mute blankness, but rather through a buildup of expressive layers that together construct a thickened distance between exterior and interior. These layers often include compositionally dramatic shrubbery, faux material cladding, high saturation paint colors, awnings, eaves, exterior shutters, interior shutters, decorative bars, security bars, glass tinting, vertical blinds, horizontal blinds and curtains of various weights and translucencies. Through formal means, the project renders potent that which is often overlooked and underdiscussed: house accessories, landscape maintenance, and the aesthetic particularities present in black and brown neighborhoods of LA.
